What Is Acne?

Acne is a condition caused by the clogging of hair follicles and oil glands. Sebaceous glands produce an oily material called sebum to keep your skin moist. The excess of sebum production leads to the clogging of follicles leading to skin inflammation. This inflammation is known as acne.

What Causes Acne?

Acne occurs when the pores of your skin produce too much oil. It might also occur due to the accumulation of dead skin or bacteria in your pores. Some of the other causes of acne could be hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, and stress issues. However, acne is more common in adolescents and teens; it also affects people of all ages.

I am sure you might have got several pieces of advice on how to tackle acne. Your mom may often remind you to take care of your skin. And if you ever visited dermatologists, they might have suggested you follow a skincare routine.

So, let’s see more about skincare!

What do you mean by Skincare?

Skincare is a way to improve the look and function of your skin to address and manage both cosmetic and medical concerns. Nourishing your skin has many cosmetic and medical benefits. For instance, a finely tuned skin-care regimen can reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and sun damage. Further, it will also help you in managing minor skin concerns, such as dryness or oiliness. Let’s have a look at the daily skincare routine for acne-free skin.

What is a Good Skin Care Routine for Acne?

1. Cleanse away the Impurities with a Cleanser

Cleansing should be the first step in every skincare regimen. It is essential to cleanse your skin twice a day. Cleansing prevents the accumulation of oil, dirt, and impurities that may clog pores and result in blemishes.

Acne cleansers are harsh and make your skin prone to breakouts. So make sure you use a gentle cleanser that dissolves the oil and bacteria without harming your skin.

2. Exfoliate your Skin

To get rid of acne, you need to hit it in the pore. Regular exfoliation helps to keep the pores free of excess skin cells and oil. Exfoliation removes dead skin cell buildup; helps smoothing and softening the skin.

You might have certainly imagined some grainy face and body scrubs for exfoliation. But, they may not be a good idea for acne-prone skin. Many acne treatment products have exfoliating properties within. Thus, you might not need a separate exfoliating product.

3. Apply a Toner

The next step after cleansing and exfoliation is to open up your pores. Toner helps in opening the pores and prepares the skin for the next steps. Toners help to remove access oil resulting in better absorption of further acne treatments.

However, toners and astringents are best for oily acne-prone skin. For dry or sensitive acne-prone skin, it’s good to use an alcohol-free hydrating toner.

4. Moisturize Regularly

A moisturizer restores hydrates and protects your skin. It is best to use on all skin types. A skincare routine for acne needs sufficient hydration. Hence, you must not neglect this step. Without a moisturizer, the glands produce excess oil, resulting in clogged pores and overly shiny skin.

A light moisturizer, every morning and night, reduces dry and peeling skin. Also remember, mixing and matching too many active ingredients may make the products ineffective and may cause severe irritation.

5. Use a suitable Sunscreen Lotion

Your skin needs protection from the sun. Sunscreen not only prevents sunburn; it reduces the development of premature lines and wrinkles, dark spots, and skin cancer. Gone are the days when sunscreens were greasy. Now, there are plenty of sunscreens that are light and non- greasy, won’t clog, and won’t make acne worse. As the acne medications make your skin sensitive, wearing sunscreen is necessary to maintain clear skin.

6. Daily Acne Treatment Medication

Your dream of achieving clear skin can happen if you stick to a consistent daily skincare routine and medications. Acne medications help clear up existing breakouts while keeping new blemishes at bay. Acne treatments contain potent ingredients that reduce pimples and lighten scars.

Generally, the counter acne treatments can help in treating milder forms of acne. But, if you have other issues related to acne, please visit your dermatologist for the right skincare regime.

If you wish to have acne-free skin, take some time out for your skincare routine. You also need to follow a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, and get enough sleep along with the medication. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix. You have to maintain patience and time to let yourself have
clear skin.
